CAZEO Current CZEO certified list.
CAZEO will be posting and maintaining a current list of all actively certified CZEO's on our website. If a name does not appear on the list it means that they are not considered certified by our organization for either failure to maintain CEC's or membership. Any use of the CZEO certification, if not actively certified, is a violation of the CAZEO Code of Ethics.
If you are a member and have maintained your CEC's and membership status yearly since 2018 and do not see your name on the list please email email@example.com and we will research the information.
P.A. 21-29 Certification Requirement Guidance
As you are all aware, pursuant to P.A. 21-29, all appointed zoning enforcement officials must obtain and maintain certification through CAZEO.
While we did not propose that legislation we support its intent and have made multiple changes and adaptations to allow some avenues for a quicker pathway for certification for AICP certified planners and previously CZEO certified zoning officers.
We are not making exceptions for any reason to our CEC or membership policies. If you failed to maintain your certification by letting your membership lapse or not maintaining your CEC's, you must try to fast track process above.
Most importantly, it is the Executive Committee's interpretation that ZEO's do NOT have to be certified by 1/1/23. The statute reads as follows:
(e) (1) The zoning commission shall provide for the manner in which the zoning regulations shall be enforced, except that any person appointed as a zoning enforcement officer on or after January 1, 2023, shall be certified in accordance with the provisions of subdivision (2) of this subsection. (2) Beginning January 1, 2023, and annually thereafter, each person appointed as a zoning enforcement officer shall obtain certification from the Connecticut Association of Zoning Enforcement Officials and maintain such certification for the duration of employment as a zoning enforcement officer.
This language does not state you must obtain your certification no later than January 1, 2023. It states that you must be engage in the process of obtaining your certification and once received must maintain such certification.
I hope this provides some clarity to our members.

CAZEO would like to address an ongoing issue with member interactions with CAZEO Executive Committee members.
While we understand the stress that everyone has been under over the last 2 years with the pandemic, interactions with the Executive Board must be kept civil and professional. Per the Code of Ethics: 1. Strive to maintain at all times a courteous attitude in all relationships with public officials, taxpayers, fellow employees, CAZEO members and the general public.
We are here as volunteers to assist you. It is a members responsibility to track and pay dues, to track announcements via the website or make sure their email is set up to receive eblasts from the organization, to track your own certification if you are going through the classes and make sure you are compliant with timeframes for obtaining your certification and to follow the processes we have in place.
As a reminder all of the Executive Board members have full time job responsibilities. We do not employ outside staff. We are not responsible for your memberships, training or tracking of these items. It is solely your responsibility. While we have records to assist and verify information, the amount of requests has become very burdensome.
Anyone going forward who addresses any member of the Board in an inappropriate manner will be subject to the Board's Code of Ethics.

Why join cazeo?
The Connecticut Association of Zoning Enforcement Officials (CAZEO) is a voluntary, professional membership association to promote comprehensive zoning enforcement policies in the State of Connecticut. Founded in 1979, with only 20 members, the membership has grown over 250 in 2010. The original members recognized that Zoning Enforcement Officials require special study, knowledge, and skills to bring about a high level of professional competence. The goals of CAZEO have been achieved in several important ways.
Gain a voice in government
CAZEO has a Legislative Committee who actively participates in any upcoming legislation. The Committee brings proposed bills to the members for comment and presents testimony when necessary.
Membership brings credibility
You can increase positive perception among members of your community as a Certified Land Use Technician (CZET) or Certified Zoning Enforcement Officer (CZEO). These certifications show the public that you take your profession seriously and that you are committed to improving your skills and education in your field.
CAZEO events and programs
CAZEO provides certification programs geared towards Administrative Staff and Zoning Enforcement Officials. Once certified CAZEO provided continuing education opportunities throughout the year to ensure our members are up to date in the most current land use issues and law.
Being a part of the CAZEO community means being able to reach out to colleagues when you have a question. These important professional contacts help guide your decisions and provide an opportunity for others to lend another side to an opinion.
